Tesla glitch cuts price of cars to £80 a month as people rush to take advantage of deal

The salary sacrifice leasing company The Electric Car Scheme has shared how a number of motorists were able to sign up for an incredibly cheap finance deal for a popular Tesla.

According to the company, a glitch in Tesla’s system saw the Elon Musk-owned company offer their Model Y crossover for just £80 per month.

Thom Groot, CEO of The Electric Car Scheme noted that a number of motorists signed up to the unexpected deal before the issue was resolved.

He explained: “While this fantastic deal on the Tesla Model Y only lasted a few hours, the number of people rushing to take advantage indicates the desire for affordable EVs.

“Our research shows that, for 68 percent of Brits, affordability is by far the biggest barrier to entry for getting an electric car. If other EVs were priced like this, the 2030 ZEV mandate discussed would be a walk in the park.”

A mid-sized electric SUV that competes against cars such as the Volkswagen ID4 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling electric car in the UK during 2023.

However, whilst it is popular, the Model Y range is not the most affordable, with the range starting at £44,990 or £441 per month for the entry-level RWD model.

As a result, a significant number of motorists placed their order, including paying a £200 down payment, before the typical leasing price was reinstated after a short while.

Thom suggested that, whilst the monthly price of Tesla Model Ys has increased back, leasing through salary sacrifice can help drivers save money.

He continued: “While these prices are unrealistic, there are ways to significantly decrease the cost of the Tesla you are in the market for through salary sacrifice.

“Through The Electric Car Scheme, a used Tesla Model Y RWD comes to just £411 per month. It’s not quite £80 but by far the best way to get behind the wheel of a Tesla, and without the wait!”

In addition, a number of car brands are introducing new budget models to their range or cutting the price of pre-existing cars.

Dacia has began to take orders for the Spring, a small five-door city car, with prices starting from £14,995 or via a lease deal of £169 with 3.9 percent APR representative.

Fiat also recently cut the price of their all-electric 500e to £21,995 after the company’s ‘E-Grant’ of £3,000, making it another good choice for short-distance journeys.
