Tesco has explained the parking rules for outside its stores warning you could get a fine if you don’t follow them. A customer messaged the supermarket over X, sharing a picture of a blue badge parking sign they had seen.
The sign, which had a blue background and a disabled sign on it, read: “Blue Badge holders only. These bays are reserved for those with a Blue Badge.”
A blue badge is a parking permit that you display in your vehicle when parking in a disabled space, to indicate you have a condition making you eligible to park there.
The shopper queried: “I’m wondering if this sign actually requires people to display their Blue Badge? So are their fines for non-display of a badge actually valid/legal?”
Tesco responded to spell out the rules. The group said: “I can advise that it is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that their badge is both valid and clearly on display before leaving their vehicle parked in these spaces.”
The supermarket had a frank warning for those parking without displaying their badge as “fines will be issues for not displaying this badge”.
The interaction comes after Tesco has faced other recent criticism for its parking policies after changing the rules so that at some locations, you can only park for 30 minutes between midnight and 6am.
Some customers have hit out at the restriction saying this wouldn’t give them enough time to get their shopping done. One shopper said: “I know to a lot of people this probably seems petty and not a big deal, but to anyone who either has kids or works hours and has to shop in the evening, or for anyone neurodivergent it’s absolutely not okay.”
Another person explained how it would create difficulty for them when buying their groceries, saying: “I also can only do the shopping on an evening. Similarly, it’s two hours to myself once a week. This is a really inconsiderate thing to do.”
One person said they would were thinking of switching to another shop as a result, stating: “We used to spend £110 a week at Tesco for husband and I, costs £65 a week at Aldi. Fresher veg, fruit, salad and the British steaks are excellent. Vote with your feet people.”
