Ben Shelton and Denis Shapovalov’s quarterfinal clash at the 2024 Mubadala Citi DC Open ended in controversial fashion when the latter was defaulted from the tournament.
The Canadian star let his emotions get the better of him as his hopes of reaching the final four of the competition began to slip away from him.
Shapovalov took his frustrations out on his racket and took aim at a member of the crowd in an incident which left the chair umpire feeling that they had no choice but to intervene harshly, defaulting him from the tournament entirely.
