Teacher at elite school resigns after being accused of sexually abusing student

A high school teacher at an elite private school has resigned after being accused of sexually abusing a former student, it’s reported.

Administrators at New York City’s prestigious Dalton School received the allegation about English teacher Mara Naaman in a letter on May 2nd, written on behalf of a student who attended the Upper East Side school, The New York Post reports.

Head of the school José De Jesús and board of trustees president Aly Jeddy said in an email to the school community that the alleged misconduct took place between 2020 and 2022, according to the outlet.

An assembly was held the following day to notify high schoolers of the investigation and flag school resources, the email continued, as per the outlet.

“Our priority is determining the veracity of these claims and determining whether there are other allegations of abuse from other members of the community,” the email read.

Naaman, 50, was put on leave once the student’s letter was received and she resigned the following Monday, May 6, according to the email.

The school reportedly said it filed a police report and hired a firm specializing in harassment and sexual abuse to conduct an investigation.

“We are only providing the name of the teacher so anyone with relevant information can provide such information,” the letter to parents read.

The NYPD and The Dalton School have been approached for comment.

Naaman taught English literature to grades nine through 12 at the school, which costs $61,000-a-year to attend, the outlet reports.

She was also reportedly a “house advisor,” a role in which staff provide academic guidance to students aswell as social and emotional support.

According to the school’s website, advisors also serve as advocates and confidants for students, building a relationship with them over their time in high school.

Naaman had previously worked at Ivy League College Columbia University, Hofstra University on Long Island, taught comparative literature and Arabic at Williams College in Massachusetts where she was granted tenure in 2013, according to her LinkedIn, as per The Post.

Mara Naaman could not be reached for comment.
