Tax blow confirmed for private schools as VAT slapped on institutions in King's Speech

The Government has confirmed that it will remove the exemption from Value Added Tax that private schools currently enjoy.

The blow to private schools was set out on Wednesday in the King’s Speech read out in Parliament from 11.30am and the Labour administration says the measure will pay for 6,500 new teachers across the UK.

Prime Miniser Sir Keir Starmer set out the economic plan that he and Chancellor Rachel Reeves will seek to deliver as they insist that growth will be the focus.

The policy was first announced in 2021, when Labour announced it would cut the tax perk for private schools and impose business rates if it came to power.
