The suspect and two other males were tracked down by a group of vigilantes in Ivory Park, South Africa, over an alleged repeated gang rape of a 14-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman. Two of the men managed to get away, but the third was caught by the group of people and killed. It is not known how exactly he died on Sunday, but his testicles had been cut off as part of the attack.
Police have launched an investigation into the rape of the two teenagers, which took place by men they were wielding knives and a firearm.
They are also looking into the man’s death.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said: “Allegations are that two girls who were walking to Lindokuhle informal settlement were confronted by suspects armed with a knife and a firearm.
“The suspects then raped them repeatedly.”
Mr Dlamini added the mob decided to take matters into their own hands when the names of the men were released into the public domain by the police.
South African Police warned people not to try to catch suspected criminals themselves.
The police tweeted: “The @SAPoliceService have warned members of the community against taking the law into their own hands after a rape suspect was fatally assaulted in Ivory Park.”
The police are still said to be looking for the other two suspects.
