Suspect charged in Philadelphia mass shooting that wounded 7, including teen girl

A 23-year-old man has been charged in a mass shooting that wounded seven people, including a 16-year-old girl, in North Philadelphia earlier this week, authorities announced Friday night.

Tyheed Harvey, of East Germantown, was arrested on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, criminal conspiracy and related offenses, the Philadelphia Police Department said in a news release.

Authorities are still looking for two other people who may be connected to the Wednesday night shooting.

The incident unfolded on Juneteenth just before 6:30 p.m. Officers responded to reports of a shooting on Bambrey St. in the city’s 39th District.

Seven people, ranging in age from 16 to 46, were wounded in the shooting and had to be taken to a hospital, officials said.

All the adult victims were transported to Temple University Hospital. One 19-year-old male, who was shot in the back, was listed as in critical condition, police said Thursday.

The other six victims were said to be in stable condition.

The youngest victim, a 16-year-old female, was transported to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children with gunshot wounds to her abdomen and right thigh.

On Thursday, police announced they were looking for three male suspects in connection with the shooting. The three individuals were driving a charcoal-gray, 2004-2008 Acura TSX, police said.

After an investigation, detectives were able to locate the vehicle and placed it under surveillance, authorities said Friday. “Shortly thereafter, [Harvey] was taken into custody as he entered the vehicle.”

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel condemned the violence and thanked detectives for their “swift response and diligent work” in arresting the first suspect.

“This senseless blatant disregard for life has no place in our city,” Bethel said.
