Stunned Dollar General shopper spots rare collectible item on shelves after Costco and Target add purchase limits

A DOLLAR General customer was left in awe after landing a popular collectible while shopping at their local store.

The rare item has been available in larger packs at competing retailers in recent years but always sells out quickly.

“Random Pokémon card moment. I got a tin from Dollar General,” the excited consumer wrote in a post on X this month.

“And I pulled the best card from obsidian flames.”

Included in the post was a snapshot of the card — the Charizard EX Obsidian Flames Special Illustration edition.

Some examples of the same card graded by the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) can go for upwards of $95, per Whatnot.

Dollar General replied with a hands-clapping emoji.

Fellow shoppers and Pokémon fans were also impressed.

“That’s awesome. I really like the art on it,” someone commented back.

“Sick pull king,” another added.

TAKING TURNS

Costco and Target also sell Pokémon cards but have been forced recently to set limits on purchases.

In January, Costco notably put its limit in place after some customers were getting in all-out brawls as they waited in line for the Pokémon Scarlet + Violet Blooming Waters 151 Premium Collection.

I kept my Pokémon cards that I bought for $35 – but I was floored when Antiques Roadshow told me they were worth $10,000

A video posted online showed two men wrestling over the cards and throwing elbows.

Each box was sold for $44.99, and after the limit policy was put in place, only two were allowed per customer.

Later on, Costco even limited employees from purchasing Pokémon cards, with a notice posted on Reddit by a staffer.

“Per Recent Corporate Email – Employees are not allowed to purchase any ‘Hot’ items until 24 hours after release,” it read.

Costco membership sharing guidelines

Costco has strict rules for membership use that shoppers must follow and they’ve been cracking down on offenders in recent years.

  • Primary Member Use: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. Sharing it for purchases is not allowed as the photo on the card must match the person using it.
  • Household Card: Each primary member can add one free household cardholder who lives at the same address. This person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per visit to Costco. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by the member.
  • Authorized Cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who doesn’t reside at your address. They will receive their own card and can shop independently.

PROACTIVE MOVE

Target also recently placed a two-item limit after the drop of the new Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Journey Together trading card series on March 28.

“The new release of Pokémon cards will be held at guest service and will have a limit of two items per household, not 2 of each SKU,” a sign read in-store, as per a post from a Target customer on X.

Limit policies at both retailers have mostly received a positive response from fans, as it gives more people an opportunity to get the highly-sought-after cards.

“We now have a chance,” a customer wrote about the Target limit.

“All the videos of people fighting and shelves being cleared within seconds, it had to be done,” another said.

Walmart has also been urged to put a Pokémon purchase restriction in place after shelves were ransacked.

The U.S. Sun also has a complete list of some of the most rare and valuable known Pokémon cards.
