Stop weed growth in flower beds and patios with 'cheap and effective' remedy – not vinegar

Even the most green-fingered gardening enthusiasts can be plagued by stubborn weeds.

Known to sprout amidst carefully curated flowerbeds and between patio slabs, killing weeds for good feels impossible without harsh chemicals.

White vinegar, salt and even baking soda are common remedies called upon by many but they’re not always effective. But there is another eco-friendly that could tackle weeds, claims William Mitchell of Sutton Manor Nursery.

William said: “There are plenty of rumours circulating the internet about newspapers helping to prevent the growth of weeds in your garden.”

Confirming the buzz, he elaborated: “The truth is, this is correct. Newspapers can be used as a cheap and effective way to stop weed growth.”

The gardening expert pointed out that because newspaper material is porous, it permits water to penetrate while simultaneously blocking light, and it’s wholly biodegradable, deeming it an environmental ally.

He explained: “You simply lay the newspaper on the desired area making sure all edges overlap and do not leave any gaps. Then, water the newspaper to help it stay down.”

For long-term suppression of unwanted growth, William suggested taking one extra step.

After setting down layers of newspaper, diligent gardeners should top it off with a generous serving of mulch and give it a good soak to secure the paper and ensure soil moisture.

However, given that newspapers naturally deteriorate over time, a fresh application will be needed every few weeks.

When alternative methods are necessary, there’s one old-fashioned, solution that never fails. Though tedious, constantly weeding your garden is extremely effective.

Tackle the weeds hands-on by carefully removing them from the root to ensure a pristine and orderly garden space. Doing so should involve pulling them from the base.

Tap roots are one to watch, manifesting as thick roots that grow deep into the soil to absorb water and nutrients. Dandelions, dock, and thistle are examples of weeds with tap roots.

As for ways to aid weed-pulling, boiling water can also be an effective weapon against paving and patio weeds. Simply pour it over the affected areas and leave them to wilt before plucking the growth from the ground.

You could even utilise leftover water from boiling pasta or rice to conserve water and eliminate weeds simultaneously.
