Stop squirrels from digging up garden by planting 3 flowers they 'dislike the smell of'

Squirrels can be a nuisance in gardens during the winter, especially around bird feeders and flower beds.

The animals will often dig up flower pots in search of food, eating spring bulbs, tubers and other plants. Squirrels also have a tendency to bury their food, such as nuts and acorns, resulting in a messy garden.

So how do you keep squirrels from digging up your precious flowers, plants and vegetables? Pest control experts have suggested a DIY method that involves using plants to deter the pests.

According to Combat Pest Control, flowers such as alliums, daffodils, and hyacinths can act as a natural barrier for squirrels due to their strong smells.

They said: “Squirrels have sensitive noses and dislike strong scents.”

The experts added: “Incorporate plants and flowers that squirrels dislike into your garden.

“For example, alliums, daffodils, and hyacinths deter squirrels due to their strong scents or unpalatable taste. Planting these strategically around your garden can help protect your prized flowers and vegetables.”

The pest control experts also recommend using other strong-scented repellants to deter squirrels from wreaking havoc in your flower pots.

One such method involves creating a hot pepper spray, with the spicy aroma said to repel them.

The experts said: “Create a homemade squirrel repellent by mixing water with cayenne pepper and a few drops of dish soap. Transfer the mixture into a spray bottle and apply it to areas where squirrels are active.

“The spicy nature of the pepper will discourage them from approaching the treated areas”

Another method to keep squirrels from invading your garden is to soak cotton balls with strong scents such as vinegar and peppermint essential oils.

“Place these cotton balls in areas where squirrels are active or use them to plug entry points.”

However, it’s important to note that these will need to be replaced periodically, as rain will cause the scents to fade.
