Eggs are a delicious and nutritious option for a weekend breakfast, and there’s an even simpler method to whip them up.
While this breakfast favourite is packed with protein, vitamin D, and vitamin B12, the traditional way of cooking fried eggs in a pan with lots of butter or olive oil can diminish their health benefits.
But fear not, Irina, a cookbook author and the brains behind Daily Yum, has let us in on a healthier recipe for fried eggs that lets you indulge in your morning meal without the guilt.
She explained: “Who says fried eggs have to be thrown into a bubbling pool of oil? You can achieve the satisfying ‘fry’ effect better with less fat and calories with an air fryer!
“Eggs cooked this way have a unique crunchy layer on the outside that pairs perfectly with the creamy yolk within. Sprinkle some seasoning and your favourite herbs, and enjoy a game-changing keto-friendly breakfast.”
According to Irina, preparing these eggs is “simple and straightforward”, all you need are the eggs themselves, a non-stick cooking oil spray, and a pinch of salt and pepper for flavour.
You’ll also need an air fryer and several small oven-proof dishes that can safely be used inside it.
Irina advised: “The dish must be oven-safe and must fit your air fryer. It could be a pie or cake pan, a small cast iron skillet, or ramekins.”
Start by preheating your air fryer for three minutes at 190C with the empty dishes inside, ensuring even cooking of the eggs once they’re being prepared. If your air fryer doesn’t come with a preheat option, simply let it run for three minutes before inserting the dishes.
Afterwards, remove the dishes from the air fryer, lightly coat each one with cooking oil spray, and gently crack an egg into each dish.
For “perfectly cooked eggs”, set the air fryer to 190C and let them cook for three to five minutes on air fry mode until they turn golden brown on top and are fully set in the middle. Start with a three-minute timer and extend the cooking time as necessary.
When the eggs are done, carefully use oven gloves to remove them from the air fryer, and then nudge them out of their dishes with a rubber spatula.
In case the eggs are sticking, trace the edges with a butter knife and scoop them out using a large spoon.
Finally, place the eggs onto a dish or atop a slice of roast, sprinkle some salt and pepper to taste, and you’ve got yourself scrumptious air-fried eggs ready to be enjoyed.
Irina exclaimed: “Making air fryer fried eggs is so easy that it almost feels like cheating!”
She added: “I love how this delicious air-fried twist on classic fried eggs makes a great way to start off my day and takes less than 10 minutes from start to finish-perfect for busy mornings!”
