The star-studded lovefest that was Sunday’s 50th anniversary celebration of “Saturday Night Live” was possibly a superspreader event, according to Steve Martin.
The actor and comedian, who hosted the opening of “SNL50,” revealed on Thursday that his pal Martin Short has come down with COVID, as did Maya Rudolph.
“Maya had Covid. Marty has Covid. I wonder why?” Martin captioned a social media post featuring a photo of the “SNL” alums kissing on the mouth during the special.
“The SNL 50th COVID curse is real,” Martin quipped.
He and Short have recently been in the midst of their national “Dukes of Funnytown” comedy tour, two dates of which have now been rescheduled due to Short’s illness.
“Unfortunately, we have to reschedule our sold out Durham and Knoxville dates,” Martin announced. Those shows have been pushed to Oct. 17 in Knoxville, Tenn. and Oct. 18 in Durham, N.C.
The 79-year-old Emmy winner then apologized to fans for the inconvenience, but said he thinks the comedians will “be funnier then, anyway.”
The fact that several in attendance walked away sick from “SNL50” was especially ironic, considering the topic was broached during the special’s “Weekend Update” segment.
“Health experts are facing increased pressure this winter in the face of outbreaks of COVID, the flu, RSV and norovirus, which they’re calling a quad-demic,” said co-anchor Colin Jost. “So we did the smart thing and packed every beloved entertainer over 60 into one tiny space.”
Short, 74, briefly joined Martin onstage during Sunday’s opening monologue.
The longtime friends, who starred in the 1986 comedy flick “Three Amigos,” have been doing national tours together since 2015. They currently star on Hulu’s hit mystery series “Only Murders in the Building.“
