Steve Bannon tells GOP crowd Trump can maybe run in 2028

Former Trump Administration cabinet member Steve Bannon suggested to a fired-up gathering of MAGA youth that the President-elect should seek a third term in 2028.

Speaking at the 112th New York Young Republican Club gala, Bannon said he’d discussed Trump running for a fourth time in the next presidential election with a prominent Trump-world lawyer and believes that’s a possibility regardless of the wording in the U.S. Constitution.

“Since it doesn’t actually say consecutive… I don’t know, maybe we do it again in ’28?” he proposed Sunday. “Are you guys down for that? Trump ’28?”

The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, makes no mention of consecutive terms.

“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” it stipulates. “And no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”

Bannon was released from prison days before the 2024 election. He spent four months behind bars for defying subpoenas from the Jan. 6 House committee investigating the 2021 attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters falsely claiming President Biden’s win in 2020 was not legitimate.

Bannon, 70, falsely claimed Sunday that Trump has won three elections.

The “War Room” host conceded on his podcast in May that the federal government would have to act nearly in unison to repeal the 22nd Amendment, which is highly unlikely, according to Politico.

Trump, 78, has flirted with the idea of running again in 2028, though it doesn’t appear to be something he’s approached seriously. Vice President-elect JD Vance, 40, is regarded by some Republicans as an early contender to lead the party once Trump is out of office.
