State pensioners urged to slash £1,372 off car tax bill – how to claim

However, those who own top-end brand new models could be caught out with prices landing in the thousands.

The top amount of car tax payable on a new vehicle in the top VED band is an eye-watering £2,745.

Divided by two, taking advantage of the discount would see drivers save a maximum of £1,372.50 per annum.

As well as discounts, certain older drivers may find they are completely exempt from paying VED and vehicle tax charges completely.

According to GOV.UK, motorists who receive the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) can apply for an exemption.

This is also the case for motorists who are picking up the enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and the enhanced rate mobility component of Adult Disability Payment (ADP).

Drivers who enjoy a War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement or an Armed Forces Independence Payment may also not be required to pay tax fees.

However, to be eligible for discounts or exemptions, motorists must make sure they follow the rules at all times.

Officials state that the vehicle must be registered in the disabled person’s name or their nominated driver’s name at all times.

Meanwhile, the vehicle must only be used for the disabled person’s personal needs.

This means the car cannot be used by the nominated driver for their own personal use outside of helping the disabled individual.
