Stanley issues recall for 2.6 million mugs after customers complain of burns

Stanley has issued a recall for 2.6 million of its popular steel mugs after an outpouring of criticism from customers, including some who said they were burned to the point of needing medical attention.

The recall covers all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs that were sold in the United States from June 2016 through this month, according to a statement from the Consumer Protection Safety Commission. It includes all 12- and 16-ounce Switchback models as well as the 12-, 16- and 20-ounce Trigger Action thermoses, all of which are made in China.

The tumblers’ issues lie in the lid, which “can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard,” the agency said.

“We ask that all customers in possession of either product immediately stop use and reach out to Stanley 1913 for a free replacement lid,” the company said in a statement. “At Stanley 1913, we are committed to constant improvement and are focused on creating quality products that are built for life.”

The recall was announced Thursday after Stanley said it received 91 reports — 16 of them in the United States — about “lids detaching during use, resulting in 38 burn injuries worldwide, including two burn injuries in the U.S., with 11 consumers worldwide requiring medical attention,” according to the CPSC.

The Stanley Switchback is described as a mug with a double-lid system, so it can transform between a spill-proof travel tumbler and a pour-through thermos. The trigger Action mug, meanwhile, was outfitted with a push-button, leak-proof lid.

Both recalled products were typically sold through platforms like Amazon as well as stores including Walmart, Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
