Speeding driver dies after car goes airborne, bursts into flames in Brooklyn

A man died after a high-speed car crash in Brooklyn Friday night and a woman died after a hit-and-run in the Bronx two hours later, cops said.

Police responded to a 911 call of a vehicle collision around 9:46 p.m. near Kings Hwy. and Avenue M in Midwood, Brooklyn. An unidentified man was driving a 2012 Ford Focus sedan “at a high rate of speed” along Avenue M as he approached the intersection of E. 34th St., police said. He struck a raised curb, causing the vehicle to go airborne and land on a westbound lane of Kings Hwy., where his car slammed into a 2024 Toyota Camry being driven by a 47-year-old woman.

The man’s Ford quickly caught on fire, with the flames spreading to the woman’s Toyota. The woman was able to escape her vehicle and was uninjured. The male driver, though, was unable to exit his car and sustained burns all over his body. EMS medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Two hours later in the Bronx, a 56-year-old woman was struck and killed near Westchester Square Hospital by a pickup truck driver in a hit-and-run.

Police responded to a 911 call at St. Raymond Ave. and Seddon St. where, according to cops, the driver of a white Chevrolet Silverado truck was traveling north on St. Raymond Ave. and made a left turn going west on Seddon St. and struck the victim as she was crossing the street.

The vehicle’s driver did not remain on scene and drove off. There has been no arrest yet in the hit-and-run.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
