Sky finally launches long-awaited free content upgrade, check your TV today

It’s been a long time coming but some lucky Sky customers can finally access more content for free. It’s just been confirmed that the long-waited U service has now officially launched which means homes can access hours of popular shows, entertainment, documentaries and drama right from their Sky devices.

For those not in the know, U is the new name for UKTV. This popular platform had a major revamp back in July in a bid to align channels such as Dave (now called U&Dave, W (now U&W), Yesterday (now U&Yesterday) and Drama (now U&Drama).

Sky promised at the start of the summer that the new U app would become available to its users but the launch was hit by some unknown issues that caused a delay.

That’s now been sorted with U appearing in the app section on Sky Glass TVs and Sky Stream boxes (there’s no word yet on a Sky Q unveiling but we will keep you posted).

Once U is launched, Sky users will find endless on-demand episodes of top-rated shows such as Gavin and Stacey, Top Gear, Have I Got News For You, Masterchef and Would I Lie To You.

The app lets you search for shows or lists things in specific categories to make it easier to discover content that suits your tastes. There’s also a Watchlists section where you can place things to view at a later date.

“The U app, formerly UKTV, is launching on both Sky Glass and Stream,” Sky explained in an update. “It’s free to use and features thousands of hours of entertainment from TV channels U&Dave, U&Drama, U&W and U&Yesterday.”

Express.co.uk has checked and U is available right now. You just have to sign up for an account and you can then watch for free and access all the best features.

Speaking earlier in the year about the transition, Penny Brough, Chief Marketing Officer, UKTV, said: “The launch of U on 16th July is an important step for UKTV, defining our age of transformation. U will present our viewers with an extraordinary range of free quality content, allowing them to connect the dots between the streaming service and our family of TV channels.”
