Shoppers forced to switch up hugely popular Easter tradition after Trader Joe’s, Walmart place limits on essential

SHOPPERS might be forced to switch a popular Easter tradition this year.

The egg shortage has meant large grocery stores have now put a limit on how many you can buy.

Not only that, but egg prices have increased with the average price per dozen being $8.99.

The current egg shortage and soaring prices in the US are primarily due to a widespread outbreak of bird flu.

Dying eggs with your children is a popular activity to do over the Easter weekend.

But with the current prices, parents may want to avoid buying them for the activity as Trader Joe’s, Walmart and Costco have put limits on how many you can buy.

Thankfully, ABC7 News has an alternative that is just as much fun and more cost-effective.

Instead of using eggs they suggest going for jumbo marshmallows.

When news anchor Victoria Sanchez went to the grocery store last week, one dozen eggs cost $8.99 while 12 jumbo marshmallows cost $2.19.

To complete the easy craft, you will need a handful of ingredients and items.

These include cups or small bowls filled with water, food coloring, jumbo marshmallows, kids’ watercolor brushes, plastic/disposable gloves, and a cookie sheet for drying.

To start, cover the surface with newspapers or bags to prevent any mess.

You can then put disposable gloves and aprons on to get to work.

Fill the cups or bowls halfway with water and add food coloring to each one.

Make sure you use plenty of coloring, as it needs to be darker than when you use eggs.

Dip the marshmallows for 1-3 seconds in each colour.

How to cut the cost of your grocery shop

BELOW are some tips on how to reduce the amount you spend on groceries.

  • Write yourself a list – Only buy items that you need. If it isn’t on your list, don’t put it in the trolley
  • Create a budget – Work out a weekly budget for your food shopping
  • Never shop hungry – You are far more likely to buy  more food if your tummy is rumbling
  • Don’t buy pre-chopped veggies or fruit – The extra they’ll charge for chopping can be eye watering
  • Use social media – Follow your favourite retailers to find out about the latest deals
  • Be disloyal – You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains
  • Check the small print –  It’s always worth checking the price per kg/lb/litre when comparing offers so you’re making a like for like decision as a bigger box won’t necessarily mean you get more
  • Use your loyalty cards – Don’t be afraid to sign up to them all. They all work slightly differently – work out what bonus suits you better and remember to trade in your points for additional rewards

Make sure not to submerge them for too long or they’ll dissolve.

Use a paintbrush with the food dye to create extra details.

Place the marshmallows on the cookie sheet to dry.

Now you have Easter themed marshmallows and the best part is they’re edible unlike eggs.
