Sausage rolls are one of Britain’s favourite snacks and are a staple at any Christmas party or gathering in the wintertime.
However, many people may not realise you do not have to spend money on frozen party treats as you can make tastier sausage rolls with just four simple ingredients.
Becky Excell, a cookbook author and founder of Gluten Free Cuppa Tea, has shared that the secret to baking sausage rolls is to ditch the oven and cook them in an air fryer.
She said: “They come out even better than in the oven as the dry environment of the air fryer ensures there’s no soggy pastry! Best of all, you can easily make this in just 30 minutes.”
Not only does the air fryer make the pastry crispier, and therefore more delicious, but the heat being evenly distributed allows all the sausage meat to cook at the same time so there’s no chance of an undercooked centre.
How to make perfect sausage rolls in the air fryer
Ingredients
- 280g of puff pastry
- 400g of sausages
- Three tablespoons of wholegrain mustard
- One egg (beaten)
This recipe is made with gluten-free sausages and gluten-free Jus-Rol pastry, which is also dairy-free.
What is great about this savoury snack is that you can easily change out the ingredients for whatever you wish, and could make the meat vegetarian or vegan if you prefer.
However, if you make these sausage rolls meat-free then Becky recommends seasoning them with paprika, cumin and a little salt and pepper.
Method
To begin, take the pastry out of the fridge and leave it to rest at room temperature before using it as if it is too cold it will break apart easily when unrolled.
While you are waiting for the pastry, remove the sausages from their skins and mash them together until you have a smooth mince-like mixture.
Unroll the puff and cut it in half lengthwise so you have two long strips. Make sure the pastry paper is on a cutting board otherwise, you can risk scratching your kitchen countertop.
Spread a line of mustard just below the centre along of each pastry strip and then add a line of sausage meat.
Fold the pastry over and use a fork to seal the edges. Brush the top of the pastry with a beaten egg and cut slashes down it with a sharp knife, then cut the sausages rolls into any size you like.
Place the air fryer at 200C for 12 to 14 minutes until the sausage rolls are crispy and completely cooked through.
Remove from the air fryer and leave to rest for five to 10 minutes before eating, then enjoy your delicious homemade sausage rolls.
Becky said: “Letting meat rest stops all the juices from immediately running out when you bite it, which would make the pastry soggy.”
