Russian 466ft ship owned by defence ministry explodes in Mediterranean with mystery cargo

A Russian cargo ship used to supply troops in Syria has sunk in the Mediterranean sea.

The Ursa Major got into trouble while sailing between Spain and Algeria.

Fourteen sailors were resuced, but two are reported to be still missing.

The ship sank after an explosion in its engine room, according to reports.

Video footage of the ship shows it heavily listing to its starboard side with its bow much lower down in the water than usual.

The unverified footage was filmed on December 23 by a passing ship and published on Russia’s life.ru news outlet on Tuesday.

The Ursa Major departed Saint Petersburg on December 11 and was last seen sending a signal at 2204 GMT on Monday between Algeria and Spain.

The ship was on its way to Vladivostok, but had called at the Syrian port of Tartus on a previous trip.

It has in the past been used to ferry equipment and supplies to Russian troops in Syria, according to the media outlet Mediazona.
