Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed their royal baby this month, and gave their newborn a name which is highly unusual by royal standards. Just like Archie Harrison, Princess Beatrice’s name surprised the nation when she was born in 1988. Reports at the time indicated that no one in the UK had placed a bet on the name.
Instead, punters had overwhelmingly plumped for the names Victoria and Elizabeth.
However, the name the Duke and Duchess of York reportedly wanted for their firstborn was entirely different.
The Sun claimed in 1988 that Andrew and Sarah Ferguson– affectionately known as Fergie – wanted to call their first-born Annabel.
However the Queen, who must approve royal names, rejected the name, apparently calling it too “yuppie”.
It is not known whether the Queen may have been thinking of Mayfair private club Annabel’s, which is said to have been a favourite of Fergie and Andrew’s, and where the Duchess of York was recently snapped with Beatrice meeting her boyfriend Eduardo Mapelli Mozzi.
Her Majesty is reported to have suggested the name Beatrice, which was also the name of Queen Victoria’s youngest child, Princess Beatrice.
When the Queen gave birth to Prince Andrew in 1960, she was the first monarch to have a child during their reign since Beatrice’s birth in 1857.
The Duke and Duchess of York waited two weeks to announce the name of their firstborn, in contrast to Archie whose name was announced two days after his May 6 birth.
Like Beatrice, little Archie similarly left the bookies smiling – as there were only a handful of small bets on the 150/1 odds.
Many had predicted that the Duke and Duchess would choose Arthur or Alexander.
Archie’s name shares another similarity with his second-cousin Beatrice, too.
Fergie and Andrew surprised royal watchers by only picking two middle names for Beatrice.
Burke’s Peerage at the time said the decision was “a departure from royal etiquette and protocol”.
Her full name is Beatrice Elizabeth Mary, which bucks the royal tradition of giving at least three middle names.
Archie, meanwhile, only has one middle name, Harrison.
Princess Beatrice, who is now 30, stunned royal watchers at her recent appearance at Lady Gabriella Windsor’s royal wedding this month.
It was the first time she had brought boyfriend Mr Mapelli Mozzi to a royal occasion.
Daily Mirror Style Director Amber Graafland, speaking on podcast Pod Save the Queen, commented: “She was having a big moment at that wedding!
“She doesn’t always get it right, let’s be honest, but she does make some great choices and this was probably one of the best things I’ve ever seen her wear.
“I think it was interesting, on the day that she looked the best she’s probably ever looked, she spent the least money.”
“She looked very happy, she looked amazing, it was definitely her day to shine.”
