Roy Keane wants Nottingham Forest star 'fined a week's wages' after Brighton blunder

Roy Keane claimed that Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels should be fined a week’s wages after his error for Brighton’s second goal in their Premier League clash.

Danny Welbeck fired a free-kick past Sels, who took a step to his right only for the former Manchester United and Arsenal striker to beat the goalkeeper on his own side, a cardinal sin to give the hosts the lead on the south coast.

“The [Forest] goalkeeper should be fined a week’s wages,” Keane fumed during Sky Sports’ half-time analysis. “He’s taken a gamble leaning to his right. He can’t be beaten on that side.”

Keane’s punditry colleague Micah Richards joked that he told the Irishman that Welbeck was capable of scoring free-kicks, despite the effort against Forest just the fourth he had taken in his top-flight career.

Keane conceded that Welbeck was “a good player” before further lamenting Sels’ role in the goal, adding: “You cannot be beaten on your side, and he’s leaning that way. Fine him a week’s wages, just for (being) so poor.

“He has taken a gamble leaning to his right but you can’t be beaten on that side. From the goalkeeper’s point of view, not good enough, but Danny always affects games.”

Brighton had found themselves a goal down in the 13th minute, when Chris Wood marked his return to the AMEX Stadium by scoring from the spot after Callum Hudson-Odoi was brought down in the area by Carlos Baleba.

They levelled just before half-time when a superb Jack Hinshelwood header was powered past Selz, who could do little to prevent the 19-year-old’s first goal of the season.

And then just minutes later, Kaoru Mitoma was fouled just outside of the Forest area and a misstep by Selz was seized upon by Welbeck to continue his strong start to the campaign.

Sels, 32, joined Forest in January and saw his position come under threat when Nuno Espirito Santo also moved to buy Carlos Miguel just a few months later.

But the Belgian has retained his place as Forest’s first-choice stopper, despite Keane calling for him to be punished after allowing Welbeck’s effort from range to beat him so cheaply.
