Jones started for Manchester United as they looked to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the Champions League quarter-final first leg.
The England international was sporting a headband after suffering a cut in the win over West Ham on Saturday.
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi ran Jones and United ragged in the first half, scoring twice to all but put the game to bed.
But it was another incident that caused a hilarious moment at half time in the BT Sport studio.
Just before the break Messi beat Jones a number of times in quick succession with dazzling footwork.
Former United defender Ferdinand felt sorry for his ex-team-mate.
“This is just… please, please,” Ferdinand said.
“This is too much.”
Lineker humorously replied: “He turned Phil Jones inside out so many times here that his bandage loosened.”
In which Ferdinand jokingly responded: “You’re out of order. You’re out of order.”
But in the cold light of day, Ferdinand could not help but heap praise on Barcelona star Messi.
“We said before the game, if he decides to turn up and take the game by the scruff of the neck, he can do it and he’s done that,” he said.
“This is what we came to see.
“Any fan that’s here, you come to see things like this from Messi.”
