After the footage was publicly released on Thursday, Lydia’s family stated the “disturbing” scene they witnessed has raised “serious questions” and they plan on taking legal action.
In a statement sent to The U.S. Sun, the family said: “Scott Stirling, father of Geoff Stirling along with his daughter Lydia McLaughlin (sister of Geoff Stirling) and Jesse Stirling (brother of Geoff Stirling) issue this statement in response to the recent viewing of the video footage of the shooting death of Geoff Stirling and its anticipated dissemination to the public.
“The family through their Attorneys was provided an opportunity to view the dash camera ‘dash cam’ and officer body worn camera videos from the night Geoff was shot and killed by a Newport Beach Police Officer.
“The videos have raised serious concerns and many questions about the actions of that police officer. Of grave and specific concern is that the videos appear to show Geoff moving away from the officer at the time he was shot six times.
“The family through their Attorneys plan to file a lawsuit in Federal Court to obtain full answers and seek accountability.”
The statement said that Geoff was “experiencing a mental health crisis” when he was stopped for a traffic infraction in the California beach town.
They also claimed: “Geoff was unarmed and posed no deadly threat to the officer.
“The Stirling family expects that all video and audio footage along with every report and shred of evidence related to this deeply disturbing shooting be preserved for presentation in due course as part of the lawsuit the family will be pursuing.
“The cause of death was blood loss. Despite the presence of multiple officers reporting to the scene, no aid was initially offered.
The family remains heartbroken and devastated that Geoff was taken from them in what appears to be an unjustified use of lethal force.
“Equally tragic is that there may have been other options and tactics available to the officer that he failed to utilize based on his training.”
