Drains can often give off sulphur-smelling odours that most describe as smelling like rotten eggs.
This unfortunate odour can emerge from your kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and shower drain.
The horrid smell could be a result of a blocked drain. The food waste, hot water, dish soap and anything else that runs through your kitchen sink can cause buildup and blockage.
Foul smells from the sink are not normally reminiscent of “rotten eggs”, claimed the plumbing experts at BlockBusters.
For those noticing a nasty smell in the bathroom, floor drains could be the culprit. This is due to the likelihood of a build-up of material as you run the water down the drain, such as hair, soap scum and other oily products.
There are a few simple ways to get rid of the drain smell in your house, which will differ slightly depending on the source.
If you are unsure of where the affected drain is there is no need to worry as some of these remedies can be used on all types of drains.
The pros claimed that using bleach is the “best home remedy” when it comes to smelly blocked drains.
They said: “Bleach can be used on every type of drain. As a disinfectant, bleach can eliminate the bacteria in drains and plumbing systems.
“You can give your bleach a better chance of clearing the smell by adding hot water.”
The experts at City Plumbing recommend diluting the bleach with water. They said: “To get rid of the odour – and the build-up – you can mix one part bleach with one part water and pour it down the drain.”
Experts at BlockBuster noted that another option is hot water. They urged: “Only use boiling water for drains without ceramic basins, such as some kitchen sinks.
“Hot water is still effective and can easily break up smelly blockages, so use this for ceramics.”
The final suggestion was to try using a drain snake. This “simple piece of equipment” can come in handy when “clearing stubborn, foul-smelling blockages”.
The experts explained: “It works by extending itself along the length of the drain and can clear hard blockages.”
