Moss is commonly known to grow on hard surfaces such as patios, decking, garden paths and driveways, along with other places like lawns.
As the weather starts to get warmer though, you may want to give your patio a clean as the winter months can leave this area looking a little grubby.
This includes a build-up of moss on its surface, which is hard to remove without specialist know-how.
Once moss starts growing between paving, it will keep growing until it takes over your patio – or until you clean it.
Paving and gardening experts at North East Paving and Gardens have shared how to remove moss from patios – it’s eco-friendly too.
Instead of using a store-bought moss killer or bleach, the experts recommend using sodium percarbonate.
They said: “Sodium percarbonate is the best and a magic solution to remove moss from patios.
“This free-flowing powder is made of hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate and can be bought in bags up to 25kg”.
Sodium percarbonate is used primarily as a bleaching agent in cleaning products and doesn’t release any harmful chemicals, unlike bleach.
The experts claimed that households will need 40g of sodium percarbonate per square metre to use this product.
They added: “Sodium percarbonate needs water for the magic to happen, so sprinkle it on the surface before rain is forecast or dampen it with a hose.”
The granules dissolve, creating oxygen that penetrates the crevices and cracks, “killing the rhizoids and preventing regrowth”.
The moss “should die and become yellow in a few hours” – at this point, it will be “very easy to remove” with a stiff broom, brush or power washing.
