Melania skipped out on an exclusive Mar-a-Lago event, the Daytona 500, and the Super Bowl, where President Trump’s presence was notably felt, marking the first time a sitting president attended the NFL championship game.
She was last seen in public around January 24 and didn’t reemerge until February 22 to accompany her husband at the Governor’s Ball.
The pair wore black suit jackets, black dress pants, and white collared shirts as they publicly held hands for the first time in a month as they entered the event.
While those who know Melania say her absence “should not come as a surprise because this is how she lives,” People reported, it turns out she was up to something that will be highly public.
The first lady is filming a documentary directed by Brett Ratner, which will be aired on Amazon Prime Video.
“Melania has been busy shooting her documentary and that has taken place in several locations, including the White House,” a Miami political source told People.
An Amazon spokesperson described the documentary as an “unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look at First Lady Melania Trump,” the Irish Star reported.
“We started the production in November, and we are shooting right now, so it’s a day-to-day life, what I’m doing, what kind of responsibilities I have,” Melania told Fox and Friends.
“It’s day-to-day, from transition team to moving to the White House, packing, establishing my team, the First Lady’s office, moving into the White House, what it takes to make the residence your home, to hire the people that you need.”
The former Slovenian model reportedly bounced between the family’s New York, Florida, and D.C. homes during the filming.
Melania said that while she does stay in the White House, she has other responsibilities in New York and Florida.
“You know, when I need to be in New York, I will be in New York. When I need to be in Palm Beach, I will be in Palm Beach,” she said.
Melania reportedly made a $40 million deal with Amazon after Netflix and Apple definitively passed on the film opportunity.
Disney is said to have made a $14 million bid, while Paramount lowballed the documentary with a $4 million bid.
“We licensed the upcoming Melania Trump documentary film and series for one reason and one reason only—because we think customers are going to love it,” said an Amazon spokesman.
Melania will reportedly receive a 70% cut from the deal.
What we know about Melania’s documentary
Little has been revealed about the first lady’s upcoming project, but here’s what we know so far:
- Amazon reportedly purchased the documentary for $40 million
- Disney gave the next highest offer with $14 million and Paramount followed behind with an offer of $4 million
- Melania described the film during a Fox & Friends interview, saying: “It’s day-to-day, from transition team to moving to the White House, packing, establishing my team, the First Lady’s office, moving into the White House, what it takes to make the residence your home, to hire the people that you need.”
- The First Lady will reportedly get 70% of the $40 million deal
- An Amazon spokesperson said there will be a short theatrical release followed by a Prime Video release
Sources close to the first lady defended her public disappearance claiming that she will “never be a traditional first lady.”
“That’s just not who she is,” the political source told People.
“[Donald and Melania] both live at Mar-a-Lago and have quarters in the White House,” a social source added.
“But she leads her own life and joins him when appropriate in either place.”
The U.S. Sun previously reached out to Melania’s office for more information but did not receive a reply.
