CHRIS Hughes’ friends have revealed why he broke down in tears after being repeatedly accused of being a game-player by his Celebrity Big Brother co-stars.

The Love Islander has struggled with the negativity towards his close friendship with JoJo Siwa – with Daley Thompson calling him a “professional” reality TV star.

Now a close pal tells The Sun that behind his boisterous, outgoing personality is a sensitive soul who will have found it upsetting to be portrayed as disingenuous.

His friend told us: “Daley doesn’t know what he’s talking about – apart from Love Island Chris hasn’t really done a reality show with a competitive element in seven years since leaving the villa.

“Having said that he is very competitive..

“But he is actually VERY sensitive.

“Yes, sometimes he does behave like a 16-year-old in a man’s body and yes, sometimes he goes too far, but absolutely there is zero malice in the boy.”

Chris, 32, spent an hour crying in the diary room after it was revealed now axed housemate Daley suggested to Angellica Bell and Ella Rae Wise that Chris and JoJo were “playing the game”.

The sportsman suggested the pair knew what they were doing in order for optimum screen time.

Chris cried: “I hate f***king toxic stuff in life like I hate environments.

“It just brings you down.”

Celebrity Big Brother continues at 9pm on ITV1 or catch up on ITVX.
