And now TikTokuser @CoinCollectingWizard, followed by nearly 200,000 fans, has sparked excitement with his latest reveal. In a viral video, he cleans a coin valued at £1,000.
Then shortly after, he said: “Did you know about the New Pence 2p coin worth £1,000? Don’t worry though this one is 1971 and not the rare date.
“Want to know what rare New Pence coins to look out for, keep watching. After the design changed from New Pence to Two Pence in 1982, a mistake was made during production of a small number of 1983 coins.”
Delving deeper, he clarifies these coins bear the old ‘New Pence’ inscription by error. The real treasure hunt is for the 1983 2p coins.
He advised: “If it says New Pence on the reverse instead of the words Two Pence then you have found it.”
Striking gold with a 1983 New Pence 2p in your pocket change could mean it’s worth a cool £1,000. However, your best bet might be checking the 1983 Royal Mint sets, where this rare blunder occurred.
Collectors have snapped up these rare error coins, which were once valued at a hefty £400. A coin enthusiast on TikTok asserted their potential to fetch an even higher price tag nowadays.
The defective coins became collectors’ gems due to a wording misprint that only a few specimens exhibit.
These blunder coins are vastly more valuable than the typical pre-1983.
He added: “If you are lucking enough to find a 1983 New Pence 2p in your change, then it is worth around £1,000. You are more likely to find the coin in the 1983 Royal Mint set though as this is where the mistake happened.”
The TikTok video showcasing the mistake received a wave of engagement, racking up likes and sparking spirited discussions.
