Queen Elizabeth II is known for being close with her family and is being referred to as “granny” by her grandchildren. But the Queen was reportedly not in a rush to meet Kate Middleton when she started going out with Prince William. According to reports, the monarch avoided the future Duchess of Cambridge for five years before officially meeting her.
Although the romance between Kate and William today would appear to be a fairytale, it apparently hasn’t always been that way.
Looking at the Cambridge family today, it’s easy to forget that more than 10 years ago, Prince William and Kate’s relationship was not the rock solid pairing it is now.
The exact date the two started dating is unclear but it is thought to be around the time of William’s 21st birthday party in June 2003.
But four years later, in 2007, they hit a rough patch and split for a brief time.

Reports claim that Prince William told the Queen he wasn’t sure about his relationship with Kate.
A few months down the line the pair reconnected and the relationship was on firmer ground.
And one year later, the time was finally right for Kate to meet the Queen.
The Queen reportedly “steered clear” of meeting her grandson’s girlfriend until it was serious.

In Kate and William’s engagement interview in 2010, Kate said: I first met the Queen at Peter Phillips and Autumn Phillips’s wedding… it was in amongst a lot of other guests and she was very friendly.”
The Duchess of Cambridge has more recently spoken glowingly of her grandmother-in-law and their relationship appears to have become stronger over the years.
In the documentary Our Queen at Ninety, Kate said: “The most memorable engagement for me was an away-day to Leicester.
“I went without William, so I was rather apprehensive about that… She was very supportive.
“The fact she took the time to make sure that I was happy and looked after for that particular occasion, which probably in everything that she’s doing is a very small element, it shows just how caring she is really.”
However, one royal expert has claimed that although “the Queen admires Kate tremendously” she “does not have an intimate relationship” with her.
Royal author Ingrid Seward told Fabulous Digital: “The Queen admires Kate tremendously but does not have an intimate relationship with her as they don’t have much in common.
“I think the Queen and Kate have a more serious relationship as obviously Kate holds all the Queen’s hope for the future and she would not want to do anything to upset that.
“The common bond with Kate would be her children and I can’t imagine the Queen spending too much time talking about them; she is a very shy woman.”
