Princess Anne’s ‘ridiculous’ claim that echoes Meghan Markle’s demands revealed

The Princess Royal – who is turning 69 today – would complain about the media attention she got, asking to be “left alone as a private person”. While she was happy to talk to journalists about her riding career, she took umbrage with being asked about her dating life. Royal reporter James Whitaker claimed this was a fantastical request, given her royal status.

Speaking on 2002 Channel 4 documentary ‘The Real Princess Anne’, he said: “Princess Anne was always bleating that she wanted to be left alone as a private person and to do her own thing.

“It’s ridiculous. She’s not a private person, she’s not a normal person, she is the only daughter of the sovereign.

“The fact that she was Princess Anne, that made the interest far greater than in anybody else.

“I’m sorry, it’s tough, it just goes with the job.”

In recent years, the Duchess of Sussex has made similar requests, wanting the photographers and reporters to leave her alone despite being married to the Queen’s grandson, Prince Harry.

ITV Good Morning Britain’s Piers Morgan accused the Duchess of “wanting to have it both ways” – to be given privacy, but also to be in the public eye when she wants to be, for example to edit Vogue UK.

He exclaimed: “She constantly bleats about privacy, but also wants to edit magazines to promote herself and tell us how to lead our lives.”

Mr Morgan also argued that Meghan is not entitled to a private christening for her son Archie, whilst taking taxpayers money for the refurbishments at their family home, Frogmore Cottage.

However, Meghan has never been so publicly frustrated as to take it out on the press pack herself, in contrast to Anne who hit headlines with now-famous phrase ‘Naff off!’

She was reportedly displeased they had snapped her falling off her horse at the Badminton Horse Trials.

However, she also got annoyed when reporters would ask her personal questions at equestrian events.

Former press secretary to the Queen, Robin Ludlow, told the documentary: “She was perfectly prepared to talk to the press about the sporting side of her activity, but what she wasn’t prepared to do was – just as she was about to enter an arena or start a cross-country course – to be asked whether she was going to get engaged to somebody.

“And this of course made her very cross, because she wasn’t there to talk about her private life and that’s when she started telling everybody to naff off.”

Daily Express royal reporter Ashley Walton and Daily Express royal photographer Steve Wood reflected on the iconic picture they took of the princess when she told them to “naff off”.

Mr Wood said: “It’s the ‘naff off’ picture, when she lost it and told me to ‘naff off’ and that created a storm.”

Mr Walton added: “The truth is, we made up the naff word to cover up another word.”

Mr Wood laughed and replied: “I think that might have been in the convestiatoin, but there were a lot of other ‘eff off’ words at the time.”

Anne stood by her uncouth behaviour, saying on ‘Parkinson’ that she did not regret using rude language.

The Princess has had a rocky relationship with the media over the years, much like Meghan seems to be experiencing now.

Neither Royal seemed to fully accept the attention that comes with being in their position.

Princess Anne – officially the hardest working royal – is turning 69 today.
