Prince Harry declares United States his official residence

Prince Harry, fifth in line for the British throne, has officially claimed the United States as his home.

The Duke of Sussex declared the U.S. to be his “New Country/State Usually Resident”  in documents filed this week with Britain’s corporate registrar, Companies House, formally shifting his primary residence out of the United Kingdom. The “new details” were submitted in a company return for his nonprofit Travalyst, a sustainable travel initiative launched by Prince Harry in 2019, as part of its standard year-end procedures.

The official paperwork — filed under the 39-year-old royal’s full name “Prince Henry Charles Albert David Duke of Sussex” — lists the date of the residency change as June 29, 2023, the same day Buckingham Palace confirmed Harry and his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, officially vacated Frogmore Cottage, their former home in Windsor.

Prince Harry relocated to California with the former “Suits” star in 2020, shortly after they announced they would be taking a step back from their royal duties. It sparked a major royal family rift — rife with allegations of racism as well as the dismissal of mental health struggles and other mistreatment — that has yet to be resolved.

The famous couple currently live in Montecito with their two children, 4-year-old Archie and Lilibet, 2.

In February, after just over four years of living in the Golden State, Prince Harry revealed he has considered becoming a U.S. citizen. He told Good Morning America that, while the “thought crossed his mind,” obtaining citizenship “is not something that is a high priority for me right now.”

He added that living in America has been “amazing” and that he loves “every single day.”

The duke’s entry into the United States was recently called into question by The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank in Washington D.C. The group has sued for his visa application, citing concern that he received preferential treatment during the vetting process given his previous admissions of drug use.

In his recent memoir, “Spare,” Prince Harry confessed to using substances including cannabis, cocaine, psilocybin and ayahuasca.
