Prevent mould with expert's 99p method using household item that 'acts as a barrier'

Beyond the unsightly stains, mould can create serious health risks, including respiratory problems and allergies.

A recent report seen by Vonhaus that nearly 29 percent of the UK population, or 15.4 million people, are dealing with issues like damp, cold, and mould in their homes.

Fortunately, there’s a surprising and inexpensive household item that could be the key to preventing mould in your home.

And if you’re struggling with condensation on your windows, this product you likely already have in your bathroom may be the perfect solution.

Emily Caloe, Senior Buyer at Vonhaus, explained: “Damp, humid environments are just the right breeding grounds for mould.

“This is compounded by poor ventilation, leaks, condensation and high humidity levels that all create the perfect breeding ground for mould spores, which can affect walls, ceilings, windows and other surfaces with unsightly stains and possible health hazards.”

To tackle this issue last home, the expert suggesting starting by thoroughly cleaning your windows, and then, applying a thin layer of shaving foam to the glass.

The foam acts as a protective barrier, reducing condensation, which is a major cause of mould growth.

After letting the foam sit for a few minutes, wipe away the excess, leaving a clear, protective layer behind.

For an equally-affordable alternative approach, Caloe recommends using white distilled vinegar, an ingredient many households have on hand for other cleaning tasks.

The cleaning pro said: “Alternatively, white, distilled vinegar— the cheapest brand from the supermarket will —will also help remove mould and kill its spores.

“Mix 1 part vinegar with 1 part water in a spray bottle and apply the solution to the affected area. Wipe down with a clean, damp cloth.

“If there is a smell of vinegar, don’t worry—it will disappear within a few hours. And remember: always wear gloves and a mask when dealing with mould.”
