Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz was unharmed while several others suffered minor injuries after press vans following his motorcade were involved in a crash in Milwaukee.
The crash happened on Monday shortly before 1 p.m. as Walz headed to a Labor Day event at Henry Maier Festival Park in Milwaukee. It involved vehicles near the rear of the motorcade, which were primarily carrying members of the press along Interstate 794.
Walz’s vehicle was towards the front of the caravan and was not affected in the incident.
Images posted on social media show large passenger vans with smashed front and backends.
Upon arriving at his event, the Minnesota governor briefly addressed the crash, saying “some of my staff and members of the press that were traveling up with us were involved in a traffic accident on the way here today.”
“We’ve spoken with the staff. I’m relieved to say that with a few minor injuries, everybody’s going to be okay,” Walz said.
“President Biden and Vice President Harris called to check in,” he continued, “and we certainly appreciate their concern, and I want to express my sincere thanks to the U.S. Secret Service and all the local first responders for their quick reaction.”
President Biden was traveling at the time to Pittsburgh for a separate campaign event and called in from Air Force One. Harris, meanwhile, had spent the day in Detroit before heading to the joint event later in the day with Biden. A spokesperson confirmed she too phoned Walz after learning of the crash.
The White House was also briefed on the collision.
