Potatoes are a real kitchen staple, as they’re so versatile and can be used for a huge array of different dishes.
Unfortunately, though, they can be a nightmare to keep fresh – as it doesn’t take much for your spuds to start sprouting, meaning you need to throw them away.
Not only is this a waste of food, but it’s a waste of money too, which is never ideal during the current cost of living crisis.
Because of this, knowing how to store your potatoes can be really helpful, in order to stop them from going bad before you have the chance to use them.
And according to one expert, they can last up to three months if you follow one golden rule.
Food writer Kate Trombly O’Brien from The Pioneer Woman says that potatoes can last up to three months if you store them right, as her tips mean no more unfortunate sprouting.
Not only does this make them last longer, but it also helps to retain their vitamin content too.
She says the first port of call begins in the supermarket when you’re actually picking out your potatoes. Make sure that they’re fresh looking, free of any bruises or sprouts, and that they feel firm when you touch them.
Kate urged: “Whatever you do, don’t store potatoes in a sealed container! Avoid closed containers like resealable plastic bags or airtight storage containers—they’ll trap moisture and will cause the potatoes to mould, sprout, or spoil faster.”
According to the pro, potatoes last longest when they’re stored between 7C-10C, which means keeping them in the fridge is a no-go.
Instead, opt for a cool, dry and dark place like the garage – but if this isn’t possible then a kitchen cupboard is fine, so long as it’s away from the heat of the oven.
Kate added: “Kept in a cool, dark place, potatoes will likely last up to three months! At room temperature (around 20 degrees), you can store your potatoes for about two weeks.”
And in order to tell if a potato has gone bad, simply give it a check for any sprouts, green parts or musty smells. If you spot any of these, or if they feel soft, mushy or have wrinkled skin, then it’s time to throw them away.
