A POPULAR grocery store chain is set to open a massive 800 new locations by 2028 – and 40 are already here.
The budget-friendly store, often pitted against Publix, is making the bold expansion amid a wave of uncertainty in the sector.

USA Today reports that Aldi is planning the growth move, over the next few years, making history in the process.
At the end of 2024, Aldi had opened nearly 120 new stores, brining its total count to over 2,400 in the US.
This made it the third-largest grocery chain in the country.
Now, the big moves are continuing to be made, and shoppers don’t even have to wait to experience them.
A spokesperson for Aldi confirmed to USA Today that Aldi has opened more than 40 stores this year already.
It also “plans to open many more ahead of summer.”
For example, Aldi announced on April 24 that it had opened its first two stores in the Las Vegas area.
This was done to “deepen its presence in the Western U.S.”
A third Las Vegas store is expected for may, and a fourth by the end of the year.
Aldi also aims to establish a footprint in Northeast and Midwest regions.
On top of this, the retailer looks to grow its presence in the West with more stores in Southern California and Arizona.
In 2025, Aldi plans to open more than 255 new locations in total as part of its five-year growth plan that began back in 2023.
According to the company, the 225 stores will be “the most stores Aldi will open in one year in its nearly 50-year U.S. history.”
STILL GROWING
This will come partly through the organic opening of new spots, and the converting of some others.
Select Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket will be converted into the Aldi format, the company has confirmed.
Through 2027, Aldi will convert about 220 Southeastern Grocers locations to its format.

This is only possible due to a deal Aldi struck with Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket in 2024.
But it hasn’t all gone as smoothly as Aldi might have hoped for.
In February 2025, Aldi revealed its intention to sell roughly 170 unconverted Winn-Dixie and Harveys spots to a consortium.
This consortium is made up of entities such as C&S Wholesale Grocers, Southeastern Grocers senior leadership, and private investors.
