POLL: Should drivers over 70 have to retake their driving test?

However, Rob stressed that later down the line checks should become a part of driving licence renewals to ensure motorists are safe on the roads.

Speaking to The Times, he said: “Certainly when we get to the age of 70, rather than just ticking the box that we’re fit and healthy to drive, thinking about it and maybe going out and getting an assessment.

“At the age of 70, I think we should be looking at having one with every renewal.”

Under current rules, motorists simply need to apply for a new driving licence at 70 to remain on the roads.

Licences must be renewed every three years while any medical conditions must be reported to the DVLA.

However, motorists are not tested on how safe they are on the roads which could be putting themselves and others at risk.

Recent data from YouGov found people in the UK are in support of road users skills being re-examined above the age of 70.

A staggering 65 percent of people in Britain said they supported examinations with 29 percent “strongly” backing the proposal.

Meanwhile, just 29 percent said they were against the scheme with 12 percent “strongly” opposing the concept.

Rob revealed that almost all drivers who failed the mature driver assessment would cross the threshold to have their licence revoked by the DVLA.

He said: “One is that your driving overall is safe. Or it can be found unsafe, at which point we advise they retire from driving.

“Around 80 to 90 per cent would get their licence revoked by the DVLA at that point.”
