A police officer was shot and wounded while responding to a domestic violence call in Central New Jersey late Friday night, authorities said.
The incident occurred just after 10 p.m. in Hamilton Township, a suburb of the state’s capital city of Trenton.
Officers were responding to a disturbance call at a residence on the 1800 block of Orchard Ave. when a suspect opened fire, the Hamilton Police Division said in a statement early Saturday morning.
One of the officers was shot and was later transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton.
The injured officer “is expected to survive,” authorities said.
One other person was also shot, local television station WPVI reported, citing the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
The office didn’t provide any details on the condition of the second individual, or how that person was involved in the incident.
Neighbors told reporters they started hearing gunshots as they were “laying in bed sleeping.”
“My husband thought it was one of those cars going by, and I said ‘No,’” Elizabeth Juliff told CBS News Philadelphia. “And then our son was at the stop sign and pretty much saw the whole thing.”
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office are investigating this incident.
