Root rot is a disease that leads to a plant’s roots deteriorating and can eventually cause plant death. It happens when a plant’s roots are often overwatered. Root rot can be chronic or acute and is more likely to be found in houseplants.
If your plant is already suffering from root rot, you don’t have to lose all hope. There is a way to stop it in its tracks.
On TikTok, Tanner, who goes by @tannertheplanter on the social media platform, shared how to save your plant from dying if it’s experiencing root rot.
In a clip uploaded to his 1.8 million followers, where he showed what root rot looks like, he said: “This is root rot. The roots literally just peel away from the plant. They have a funky kind of smell to it. Kind of swampy.
“Not a pleasant smell at all. But here’s how we’re going to fix it. First, you’re gonna wash off all of the soil from the roots.

“Now I’m using the same pot that the plant was in. We lost a lot of the root, so there’s no reason to actually increase the size of the pot.
“So make sure that you clean the pot really really well before you reuse it.
“You don’t want any contaminated material to be left behind.
“But from there, we just repot, I just use a general purpose potting soil for the peace lily. They do like to retain quite a bit of moisture, and from then, expect a little bit of shock, but with a little bit of TLC it should be back to normal,” he finished off.
