Piers Morgan: GMB host slams suggestion Meghan Markle will be bigger than Princess Diana

Piers Morgan, 54, has spoken out about Meghan Markle, 37, and husband Prince Harry, 34, amid reports the couple are planning to spend a lot of time in Africa. The Good Morning Britain host spoke candidly in his column for MailOnline, where he slammed the Duchess of Sussex for not being in the “same fame stratosphere” as Princess Diana. Speaking about the royal’s fame, the ITV favourite said: “What a load of over-hyped baloney. “Meghan Markle is not in the same fame stratosphere as Diana occupied, for all manner of reasons; the most significant of which relates to the order of ascension to the throne.”

He explained Princess Diana being married to Prince Charles made her a direct heir to the throne.

However, Prince Harry is currently sixth in line to the throne so is highly unlikely to ever become king.

Piers fumed: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex may think they’re the biggest young royal stars, and their behaviour certainly suggests they do.

“But they pale into royal power insignificance compared to their rivals, William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who will one day be King and Queen.”

It comes after a Sunday Times source reportedly claimed they were encouraged to move to Frogmore Cottage near Windsor by senior Palace officials, to keep them out of the spotlight.

The insider told the publication: “They sent them down to Frogmore to try to keep them out to the limelight for a bit. This is doomed to fail.

“They are worried that Harry and Meghan are going to establish a totally separate enterprise that nobody can get under control.”

The source added royal officials are finding ways to “harness the tremendous global attention” the couple receive.

It was recently reported the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may be making plans to move to Africa to take on a new role after the arrival of their baby.

Meghan, who is heavily pregnant, is expected to give birth later this month or early next month.

Just weeks ago they opened a joint Instagram which currently boasts over five million followers.

Meanwhile, Piers has recently been on a Easter break away from his regular stint on the ITV show Good Morning Britain.

His co-star Susanna Reid, 48, took to Twitter to speak about his departure and wrote: “For people asking where @piersmorgan is this week, a possible explainer from my WhatsApp chat (me in green) on Sunday,” she told her 582,000 followers.

She also added the hashtag: “#AFCvCPFC”, referring to Arsenal’s recent premiere league match against Crystal Palace where the former team lost.

The presenter’s lighthearted post appeared to joke Piers might not be returning to GMB this week due to the loss.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
