The NYPD cleared out a student-occupied encampment on the main lawn at Columbia University on Wednesday, April 18, 2024, in New York City. The pro-Palestinian students were protesting the war in Gaza during their two-day encampment on the ivy league campus. Hundreds of officers wearing helmets and armed with batons took many of the student activists into custody. This action comes after tensions were climbing between the police and students and university president Minouche Shafik defended the administration’s response to campus antisemitism in front of Congress.
