A search was underway in Philadelphia on Thursday for a group of suspects who opened fire into crowd, wounding seven people, including a teen girl.
The victims were standing on a sidewalk along North Bambrey Street when the shooting started Wednesday evening around 6:20 p.m. Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. They were approached by a dark-colored four-door sedan, from which a group of at least three men emerged and unleashed more than a dozen rounds of gunfire.
“We believe they shot into this crowd intentionally and that someone may have been the intended target,” Small said. “Very possible that several others or most of them were not the intended target, they were struck by stray gunfire.”
When authorities arrived on the scene a short time later, they found two women suffering from gunshot wounds to the leg, both of who were transported to Temple University Hospital for treatment, ABC 6 reported. Officers were also approached by a 16-year-old, who was struck in the abdomen, police said. She was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.
Another four people, two men and two women, transported themselves to the hospital in private vehicles, according to authorities. All of the victims, who range in age from 16 to 46, are listed in stable condition. Small said they also all lived on the street where the shooting occurred.
As of Thursday morning, no arrests have been made. Police said they have surveillance video of the sedan involved leaving the scene. It was last spotted heading eastbound on Somerset Street. Small also noted the dark-colored sedan also had ” some sort of yellow tape or plastic securing the rear trunk.”
What exactly prompted the gunfire was unclear and anyone with information regarding the violence has been asked to contact authorities.
