Peace lily houseplant will flower in autumn with 3 easy care tips

While spring blooming season has waned, and any peace lily white spathe would have wilted away, now is the time to encourage new blooms.

The beautiful plant will still have its luscious green foilage if it has been taken care of, but some people may struggle to get the plant to flower once more.

Thankfully, there are ways to encourage the peace lily plant to bloom again during the cooler months. According to gardening experts at Gardening Know How, providing the “correct” cultivation can significantly increase the chances of a peace lily flowering.

Soil

The peace lily plant should be potted in well-draining soil rich in organic matter. A blend of potting mixes with textured elements like perlite is recommended for optimal growth.

Watering

The experts advise using distilled water, as peace lilies can be sensitive to certain minerals and chemicals found in tap water. To water the houseplant, wait until the top couple inches of soil are dry before giving it a generous watering once a week or so.

If the plant appears to be wilting, it likely needs more water as wilting is a common sign of dehydration.

Light

The experts suggested keeping the plant in a spot away from direct sunlight but in a bright enough room. “Gradually move the plant to brighter light if it is in a very dark room,” the experts said. “This could spur a non-blooming peace lily to flower.”

It’s not uncommon for peace lilies not to flower in their first year post-purchase, but with patience and the right conditions, they will flourish.

Achieving the perfect indoor blooming environment can be challenging during winter months, so adhering to all the recommended steps is crucial for encouraging flowering.

One of the best ways to encourage new flowers, according to Gardeners’ World, is to feed the plant with fertiliser during spring and summer.

Now that those seasons have passed, do not be discouraged if the peace lily fails to bloom this autumn because of a lack of fertiliser.

Peace lily houseplants can live for up to 20 years, so there’s time to feed the hungry plant early next year in spring.

With the addition of fertiliser and the best living conditions for the plant, beautiful blooms are likely to flower throughout the next year.
