Peace lilies are renowned for their elegant white or cream-hued blooms accompanied by their vibrant green leaves.
A healthy and mature peace lily houseplant will typically produce one to two flowers on average.
However, some peace lily varieties may have a slower flowering rate than others. But, according to a seasoned gardener, there’s a trick to coax these houseplants into blooming more quickly.
On the Gardening UK Facebook page, a woman shared her excitement after giving her peace lily a common kitchen scrap, which prompted a flower to emerge.
Maria Baligasa posted: “Good morning. Super excited with my peace lily. After putting banana peels, they started to grow flowers faster. It is working so well!”
The enthusiastic houseplant owner shared before and after photos, showcasing the peace lily’s transformation from a non-flowering plant to one with a stunning white bloom.
This hack may be effective because the banana peels provide the peace lily with essential nutrients for blooming.
According to Lawn experts, potassium is a “vital nutrient for peace lilies” that “helps with flower production”.
They noted that a potassium-deficient peace lily is unlikely to produce flowers, but owners can remedy this by using a “potassium-rich fertiliser” or adding banana peels or eggshells to the soil to enrich it.
In addition to supplying the right nutrients, peace lily owners need to create certain conditions to ensure their plant blossoms.
Peace lilies thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. Excessive direct sunlight can burn their leaves, while insufficient light can prevent flowering.
Position peace lilies near a north or east-facing window where they can soak up filtered light. If natural light is scarce, think about using a grow light as a supplement.
Pruning and cleaning are also important considerations for peace lily owners. Removing yellowed or dead leaves can stimulate new growth and blooming.
Trimming your peace lily can also help channel energy towards flower production.
Regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to get rid of dust and enhance photosynthesis.
