Thousands of Brits bake every single day, but there’s always something new to learn in the kitchen.
No matter how many cakes and pastries we’ve whipped up over the years, nobody can say they’re faultless when it comes to cooking up a storm. Recently, Great British Bake Off’s Paul Hollywood has blown people’s minds with a shocking fact.
He recently took to TikTok to make some scones, and taught people something new about the baking cutters they use so often. The baking expert said, if you’ve ever wondered why baking cutters have two different edges, there’s actually a reason behind it.
Mr Hollywood admitted there’s a sneaky “truth” about the kitchen gadgets that people aren’t aware of. He held up the ridged side of the cutter, and said: “That would be about 20p in a bakery on the high street.”
Then he turned it around to show the side with the smooth edge, and added: “That’s about £1.50 in a five star hotel in London.”
He laughed to himself and told people “that’s the difference”. So, in a nutshell, it doesn’t impact your baking skills, but it does impact the price of a scone when you’re out and about.
If your scone has a smooth edge, he thinks you’re likely to pay more for it as it’s considered a bit “more posh”. It’s unbelievable what difference a cutter can make to someone’s fine dining experience.
Since it was shared, the video has been liked more than 20,000 times, and dozens of people have commented. The only snag is people claimed they’ve never seen a scone priced at 20p in recent times.
One person quipped: “I’m off to the Ritz for a £1.50 scone.” Some people thought he may be referring to the whole sale prices though.
One person wrote: “I thought it was ruffled for fruit and round for savoury. I think I was lied to.” Another added: “I always thought the straight side was for savoury scones, and the fluted side was to indicate sweet.”
A third replied: “The cheese scones at my work are with the scalloped one, and are £1.50 takeaway. We always sell out.” Meanwhile, a fourth wasn’t amused, writing: “All his pricing are way out. So far away from the reality of life in 2024.”
