A Brit has declared that a popular Turkish tourist resort is “finished as a holiday destination.”
There has been mounting panic in Turkey as tourism numbers have reportedly fallen off a cliff due to soaring inflation impacting on travel budgets.
Now fresh scenes on a near empty beach in Marmaris has prompted a British TikToker to say that he’s “never ever seen it this quiet.”
Scott Lummis – who shares content on from his account @official_scottylum2 – says he’s watched the decline of visitors over the last two to three years.
In a clip he has posted to the platform he says that he has “proof that Marmaris is finished as a holiday destination.”
He said: “Now I made a video on my other account and people said ‘yeah but look at the time of the day, that’s why it’s so empty’.
“Now I don’t to bust my camera on noone and put it in their face but you can clearly see here in my background – and I’m going to continue to walk for a bit – that it is extremely quiet and if I was to like go up and speak to these people most of them are Turkish.
“Now people will be like ‘yeah but it’s Turkey, yeah but it’s the main beach, that’s where the locals go.”
Scott says that there may be people doubting his claims, but claims that he’s witnessed first hand how the resort has changed.
He said: “You haven’t seen it the last few years like I have. So I have watched the change and it’s got worse and worse and worse and I have never ever seen it this quiet.
“Now of course the kids are back at school today but when I tell you this is no different to how it’s been for the last two/three weeks. No different at all.”
Turkey is set to extend their 50 percent decrease in hotel rates after scores of accommodations have been left empty due to a severe decline in tourism.
Earlier this year Turkey offered reduced rates in some popular resort hotels in a bid to entice more domestic and international tourists.
Visit Turkey exclusively told Express.co.uk that “some resorts have seen an increase in bookings as a result, but the full effectiveness of these discounts will be clearer towards the end of the season”.
They added: “The discounted rates are primarily being offered in popular resort areas such as Bodrum, Marmaris, and Antalya.
“These discounts are typically available during the peak summer months but may be extended depending on occupancy rates and market demand.”
