A newborn baby was among six people stabbed to death inside a home in a suburb of the Canadian capital on Wednesday night, police said.
The six victims were from Sri Lanka, including a mother and four young children. The father of the family was also injured in the attack and is in the hospital.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the incident a “terrible tragedy.”
Febrio De-Zoysa, 19, has been arrested and charged with six counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder, police said.
De-Zoysa reportedly knew the family and had been living in their house, police added.
The six victims on Wednesday were found inside a home in Barrhaven when police arrived on the scene around 11pm.
Mass murders are rare in Canada – especially in Ottawa, which saw 14 murders in 2023 and 15 in 2022. Ottawa has a population of one million.
