OpenAI says ChatGPT back online following global outage

OpenAI said it has identified and fixed an issue that left millions of global users unable to access ChatGPT and the recently released AI video generator Sora.

“We’re experiencing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix,” the AI giant posted on X shortly after 6 p.m. ET.  “Sorry and we’ll keep you updated!”

OpenAI’s services were “unavailable” for just over four hours, according to the company’s status page.

Its interface for software developers, or  API, was also affected by the outage.

Recovery of the popular AI chatbot and OpenAI’s video generation model began just before 10 pm, with all services deemed “fully operational” by 10:38 p.m.

“ChatGPT, API, and Sora were down today but we’ve recovered,” OpenAI posted on X early Thursday morning.

The network outage was reported just hours after the popular AI chatbot was integrated into the latest update of Apple’s operating systems.

OpenAI hasn’t confirmed whether the Apple integration was related to the outage.

Earlier on Wedneday, a massive outage affected users of Facebook, Instagram and other Meta-owned platforms worldwide.
