Octopus Energy gives customers automatic £150 off bills

Octopus Energy is giving customers an automatic £150 off their energy bills this winter.

The discount is a one-off payment that comes as part of the government’s Warm Home Discount scheme to households in England, Wales and Scotland.

The scheme has been extended by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for 2024/25 to help vulnerable households that are in, or at risk of, fuel poverty this winter.

You’ll qualify for the £150 off if you get either the Guarantee element of Pension Credit, or if you’re on a low income, have high energy costs and claim any of the following benefits:

  • Housing Benefit

  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)

  • Income Support

  • the ‘Savings Credit’ part of Pension Credit

  • Universal Credit

If your household income falls below a certain threshold and you get either Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit you may also be eligible.

If you live in Scotland, the same criteria apply, but you must also meet your energy supplier’s criteria for the scheme.

The discount will be applied to your electricity bill directly by Octopus Energy if you qualify, rather than as a direct payment to you.

You should get a letter between October 2024 and January 2025 if you’re eligible and the £150 off will then be applied to your bill automatically by the end of March next year.

Octopus Energy said: “The Warm Home Discount helps eligible customers cover their high winter bills. Customers who qualify receive a credit of £150 towards their energy bills before 31 March 2025.

“Households that qualify for the Warm Home Discount will be sent a letter from HM Government. Letters are expected to be sent to qualifying customers between October 2024 and mid-January 2025, confirming that they may be eligible for the rebate and any next steps.

“Your letter will say if you will receive a rebate automatically or if you need to call the WHD helpline (0800 030 9322) to confirm your details. If advised to, it is important that you call the helpline telephone number included in your letter before the final claim date 28 February 2025.”
