NY man fatally shoots NJ Ramada employee, wounds another

A New York man staying at a Ramada Inn in New Jersey fatally shot one employee and wounded another before fleeing the scene and evading law enforcement for nearly a week, police said.

Details about the double shooting at the Ramada Inn in Fairfield were revealed in a probable cause affidavit obtained by NJ.com on Thursday, shortly after the arrest of Tyrone Malcolm in connection with the case. He’s facing charges including, murder, attempted murder and, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

According to the documents, Mohammed Sahariar and a second unidentified victim were working at the inn on Two Bridges road when they were shot on October 4 around 12:30 p.m. Prior to the deadly gunfire, 28-year-old Malcolm was caught on surveillance camera arriving at the hotel in his girlfriend’s white car. He then went inside and spoke to Sahariar at the front desk, though police noted this exchange was not in view of the cameras.

From there, the pair walk into the manager’s office, where authorities would later find Sahariar suffering a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead about an hour after the shooting, around 1:35 p.m. When they moved his body, authorities discovered a printout outlining room details for Malcolm. Police said there were also multiple spent 380-caliber shell casings littered about the office.

A second hotel employee, who was also struck in the chest by the gunfire, was rushed to an area hospital, where he remained in critical condition Friday. As he was being loaded into the ambulance, he told police he was “shot by an individual named ‘Malcolm Tyrone,’” the affidavit said.

In an interview with law enforcement, Tyrone’s girlfriend said they stayed at the Ramada Inn the night before the shooting, then went out to breakfast the following morning. When they got back to the hotel, she said she went back to her room while Malcom went to the front desk. She added that Malcom returned to their room a short time later, and told her to immediately pack their belongings.

“We have to go! Come on, we gotta go!” Malcom said, per the affidavit.

She did not offer any details about the motive or what prompted the shooting, police said.

Malcom, from Middletown, taken into custody on Wednesday by members of U.S. Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force and Essex County detectives. He was being held in New York, pending extradition to New Jersey.
